Android 2.0 & Multiple Resolution Support

This weekend, in anticipation of the Verizon Droid’s arrival this week, I released an update to Musical Lite and Musical Pro that should provide support for Android 2.0 and the new larger and smaller screen sizes that are heading to the next generation of Android phones.  Once the Droid comes out, I’ll hopefully be able to experiment with the multi-touch and implement it in Musical (as Android 2.0 on new phones finally supports multi-touch).  Sorry for the lack of exciting new features in this release–I had to spend my time making the existing features work with new phones.  Good things are coming… stay tuned!

any word on multitouch support for the droid?

    thanks!

  2. Christopher Souvey says:

I’ve actually already finished adding Android 2.0 multitouch features. Unfortunately, the Droid’s multitouch is terrible, so I’m not sure I’m going to release it. The Droid only supports 2 fingers, and the fingers have to be 2 full white keys (!!!) apart before it will detect them separately. I’m still trying to figure out what to do about this, as people will be expecting multitouch, but it just isn’t good enough…

  3. Chris H says:

Is there any chance you could put a version of musical lite in appslib for the new archos 5? It doesn’t have android market but I’d really like to try musical out on it.

  4. Christopher Souvey says:

I’m currently investigating alternative distribution platforms. Hopefully I’ll find a good way to provide support for the Archos soon.

  5. Fabio says:

    Here’s another feature request.
It would be great to have some tool to learn how to read music. I’ve used some windows software when the notes flowed along the score and the user had to type their name.
Also, some tool to practice rhythms would be just great. If you know GNU solfege (that’s an open source program available for windows and linux) it has that and many other features too.

    Thank you for reading.

  6. Christopher Souvey says:

I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I haven’t decided yet how much I want to focus Musical Pro on education, but I will likely blog post about it when I make some decisions. Thanks!

  7. ari-free says:

what about using the droid’s physical keyboard?

  8. Christopher Souvey says:

The Droid’s keyboard doesn’t have enough rows/keys to work correctly in the “Keyboard” mode (which works on the G1 with the physical keyboard, and will partly work on the Droid). And in the scrolling mode, I’m not sure how exactly keyboard support would work, since the keys are constantly changing as you scroll.

  9. Tom says:

Can you add a spot to re-callibrate?

It came up the first time I launched it when you updated it, but I can’t find a way to do it again.

    That would be awesome!
    Thanks for a great tool.

  10. Christopher Souvey says:

There is no calibration feature–capacitive screens don’t require constant calibration like resistive ones
What you saw was probably the multitouch wizard, which just tells you what type of multitouch your device has and enables it for the drums and piano.

Why are you looking for it? Are things not working correctly?

  11. Jeff says:

    Christopher:

My hats off to you, you’ve obviously created a great app; my problem….

I’ve only had my droid for two days, but I got it partly because I wanted an app like yours and none was available on my blackberry. So imagine my frustration, when I cannot find it to download anywhere. It supposedly is available on android market, but how do you find anything on that website, when it has no search tool?

I really want to buy it. How do I do that?

  12. Christopher Souvey says:

The Android Market (like most applications in Android) has search functionality. The easiest way to access it is by pressing the search button on your device.
Once you get the search open, just search for either Musical Pro or Musical Lite and it should work

  13. Jeff says:

    Christopher,

Thanks, I got it. My problem was I was accessing the Market from the web, instead of the widget on the phone. From the web there is no search. Thanks for the great program.

  14. Adam Turcotte says:

I noticed in the 4 Pad mode for drums that the sounds do not match the labels, but rather those above them in the 8 Pad mode. I would like to see these remapped.

    Thanks!

  15. Christopher Souvey says:

I was informed of this bug this week by someone else as well, and I will hopefully have time to release a fix this weekend. Thanks

  16. Scott Adair says:

Droid user with the latest 2.1 upgrade. Desktop client is running on the Mac with the IP 192.168.1.100 but the Musical Pro fails to connect. But it already is connected and WiFi works fine, with the Droid having IP 192.168.1.101 Any ideas on how to connect so MIDI from the Mac can be used. That’s why I purchased Pro. Thanks.

  17. Jonathan says:

Any news on the multi-touch front? Do the newer phones (e.g. Desire) or Android 2.1/2.2 offer any improvements with the problem of fingers needing to be two keys apart?

  18. Christopher Souvey says:

I’m not sure about the Desire, specifically, but I tried out a bunch of the new devices at Google IO, and they seemed to have much improved multitouch screens (ex: I think the Evo supported 10 fingers or something).
The version of Android isn’t going to be able to fix it–it is almost exclusively a hardware problem (I’m running 2.2 on my Nexus One, and it still doesn’t work properly)

  19. stisi says:

    Hy,

    thanks for your great work!

My question: Is Musical lite open source, or closed?

    Thank you, stisi!

  20. Christopher Souvey says:

It is closed source, but I’m always happy to answer questions about how the internals works
